A chess set by Orr Kislev

A chess set by Orr Kislev

How do you take a classic game and make something new?

“Just” make your own version of it.

Capture Chess is simply a chess set made as a class project in an industrial design class.

What stands out about this set is that the pieces are designed so that when you capture one, you simply place the victor on top of the victim.

No change to the rules, but an elegant physical design that captures the history of the game.

A design idea worth exploring further in this game and others.
Or, perhaps an inspiration of a chess variant (score-based on stacked, captured pieces?).

How does the physical implementation of a game affect its rules?

Is there some inevitable game play that springs from a game’s embodiment?

A multitouch screen

Multi-touch screens are just amazing. The early demos of Microsoft’s Surface computing environment included some intriguing games.  Andrea Bianchi and Ian Oakley have demonstrated a series of magnetic “appcessories” (ugh)… interface elements based on magnets.

Could be really cool for making game components for tablet-based games or other games using multi-touch screen technology.

Part of an exhibit on steam power at the Deuts...

Another random thought – what games would you design if you were going to have it powered by steam?

Not Steam, as in Valve Software, but Steam as in locomotives. Boiling water. Valves, pistons…

Extra points for avoiding Steampunk.

I was inspired by a steam-powered automata.

The visceral feel and way steam engines work would seem to create an interesting atmosphere for game play.

If there are steam-powered toys, why not games?

Would the steam power some sort of computing engine? or simply a crazy toy running amok on the board?

What kind of board games would you design to play outside?

I saw this article on Giant Board Games.

I’ve been wondering about larger, sculptural games to put outside in your yard.

Giant Jenga is obvious, as well as living chess games, but what are the opportunities for original outdoor “board” games?

My table saw’s on Fire! (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

My battleship is afloat, but my table saw was aflame.

Stel Games is about crafting original games out of wood and clay and metal… getting away from cardboard.

Its been (mostly fun).

My last shop experience was in Junior High School.

Long, long ago … when they still had shop in school.

Hello, Battleship Poker

One of my “launch titles” is a Battleship Poker. It is a skill game inspired by an online game, Thwart Poker. I’ve had a good heads up, 2-player game design that has worked for a while. I’ve really wanted to make the game multi-player, like regular poker, and nothing jelled until today.

Multi-player Battleship Poker, here I come.

The Perils of Game Fabrication

A good start to the day.

Fabrication is the my challenge. I’ve been working on some jigs for my table saw. While working on some cuts, my power cord caught fire!

I had just turned on the saw. That awful burning smell hit my nose and I shut down immediately.

The plug was gone. Somehow, I beat the circuit breaker shutting things down.

Off to Home Depot for a new plug.
